FOREIGN LANGUAGES

At Green Meadow Independent School, children have contact with modern languages and foreign cultures at an early stage, since we believe the development of pupil’s cultural awareness in all its aspects constitutes a vital part of young people’s education. Throughout their time with us, we aim to build up pupil’s vocabulary, communication skills, and their awareness of different cultures and languages from around the globe. The lessons are fun, exciting and relevant to the pupils. At the start of lessons, the focus lies on communication and the development of skills that might be beneficial to pupils when visiting a foreign country. Our main foreign language is Spanish.

Our teachers offer a foreign language education which foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. Teachers enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. It should also provide opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking and read great literature in the original language.

AIMS

Through the national curriculum for languages our teachers aim is to ensure that all pupils:

  • speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation

  • can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt

  • discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.
